Every now and then a wedding comes along that completely takes your breath away. Not just because of one element, but because of everything. The venue, the flowers, the people, the atmosphere. The sheer scale of thought and love that has gone into every single detail. Helen and Tom’s summer wedding in Oxford at The Bodleian Library was one of those weddings. It was spectacular from the very first moment, and I genuinely did not want to leave.
Planned to perfection by the wonderful wedding planner Katie Louise, this was a celebration that had everything. A historic Oxford ceremony, pink balloons in the Sheldonian Theatre. A floral arch on the Wren Door, a choreographed first dance and enough entertainment to keep every single guest thoroughly happy all night long. Furthermore, as a summer wedding in Oxford, it was completely and utterly unique.
A Beautiful Morning at the Old Bank Hotel
Both Helen and Tom began their day at the Old Bank Hotel in Oxford. One of the most beautifully situated hotels in the city. Tom spent the morning with his groomsmen before making his way to the Kings Arms pub to begin greeting guests ahead of the ceremony. He then added the final touches to his look outside the Bodleian Library itself. Buttonholes and all, which made for some wonderfully characterful photographs.
Helen spent her morning with her six bridesmaids and three flower girls. It was a wonderfully busy and joyful getting-ready session. She finished her preparations in a room at the very top of the Old Bank Hotel. Complete with a balcony overlooking the most extraordinary panorama of historic Oxford. The landmarks, the rooftops and the ancient stone spread out below her created the most breathtaking backdrop for bridal portraits. We made full use of every single minute on that balcony, and the photographs are simply stunning.
Helen looked absolutely incredible. She wore a sleek and elegant lace gown that was completely timeless and perfectly suited to the grandeur of Oxford. Her bridesmaids were pretty in pink, and the whole group looked beautiful together. It was the most perfect start to a truly spectacular summer wedding in Oxford.

A Heartfelt Ceremony in Convocation House
The wedding ceremony took place in Convocation House at the Bodleian Library, and it was a truly special and personal celebration. Helen’s local vicar had travelled all the way to Oxford especially to conduct the ceremony, which gave it a warmth and familiarity that made the whole occasion feel deeply meaningful. The room was full of emotion throughout, and the love between Helen and Tom was completely evident in every single moment.
After the ceremony, we all headed down to the Bridge of Sighs for confetti, which is always one of my absolute favourite moments of any Oxford wedding day. The architecture frames a couple beautifully, and the confetti photographs there never disappoint. Furthermore, with such a large and joyful wedding party gathered together, the energy at the Bridge of Sighs was absolutely electric.

The Most Spectacular Drinks Reception in Oxford
After confetti, everybody made their way back up to the Bodleian for the drinks reception, and what a drinks reception it was. I have photographed many weddings in Oxford, but this one was so beautiful, with the outdoor furniture beautifully complementing the Bodleian Library.
The drinks reception took place both in the quad outside the Wren Door and inside the Sheldonian Theatre. The Wren Door, already one of the most beautiful spots in Oxford, had been dressed with the most extraordinary floral arch. It was breathtaking, and it made for the most stunning portrait backdrop.
Inside the Sheldonian Theatre, the transformation was simply extraordinary. The ceiling, already adorned with beautiful historic artwork, had been dressed with giant pink balloons that filled the space with colour, joy and the most wonderful sense of celebration. I have never seen the Sheldonian look so beautiful, and that is saying something. There was entertainment for the children and a magician keeping the adults thoroughly entertained throughout. It was one of the most thoughtfully and brilliantly planned drinks receptions I have ever attended.

Portraits Across Oxford
During the drinks reception, I slipped away with Helen and Tom for their couple portraits across the city, and we made the most of every extraordinary Oxford location available to us.
We took in the Science Museum steps, the Bridge of Sighs, the quad around the Bodleian and the Wren Door with its spectacular floral arch framing the couple beautifully. Every location brought something completely different and completely stunning. Helen and Tom were completely natural and relaxed throughout, and their portraits are some of the most beautiful I have ever taken in Oxford. The combination of the iconic locations, the soft summer light and Helen’s stunning lace gown all came together in the most extraordinary way.
The Wedding Breakfast in the Divinity School
After the drinks reception, everybody came inside for the wedding breakfast in the Divinity School, and it was absolutely breathtaking. If the drinks reception had set the bar high, the Divinity School raised it even further.
Tall floral arrangements of pink and white flowers lined three long banquet tables, and the effect was simply jaw-dropping. Long tables always work so beautifully in the Divinity School. They add to the drama of the room and create a sense of grandeur that shorter round tables simply cannot replicate. The whole space glowed with warmth and colour, and every single detail had been considered and executed to perfection.
The speeches were a wonderful mix of funny and heartfelt, with tears and laughter flowing in equal measure throughout. The food, supplied by the exceptional Oxford Fine Dining team, was as stunning as always. Furthermore, the whole afternoon had a wonderful sense of flow and effortlessness that is the hallmark of truly brilliant wedding planning. Katie Louise and her team should be enormously proud of every single detail.

An Epic Evening in the Sheldonian Theatre
After the wedding breakfast, everybody moved back across to the Sheldonian Theatre for the evening reception, and Helen changed into a gorgeous short dress perfectly suited to a night of dancing and celebrating.
Then came the moment that had the whole room completely captivated. Helen and Tom surprised their guests with a beautifully choreographed first dance to You’re the One That I Want from Grease. It was absolutely brilliant. The routine was flawless, the energy was electric, and the whole room erupted. It was one of the most joyful and memorable first dances I have ever photographed, and the perfect start to the evening entertainment.
The party that followed was spectacular. Dancing, a casino, evening cocktails, a photobooth, and something wonderful to keep every single guest entertained throughout the night. The Sheldonian Theatre, already extraordinary, came alive with music, laughter and celebration in the most magical way. I stayed as long as I possibly could because honestly, this was not a wedding I wanted to leave. It was one of the greatest evenings I have ever spent at a wedding, and I feel so privileged to have been there for every single moment of it.
