Some moments in my job stop me completely in my tracks. Being trusted to capture a surprise proposal is one of them. Being trusted to capture one at one of the most beautiful hotels in the Cotswolds, for a couple who had travelled all the way from New York to make it happen, is something else entirely. JR and Leah’s proposal at The Thyme Hotel in Southrop in The Cotswolds was one of the most intimate and moving moments I have ever witnessed. I feel genuinely honoured to have been there.
From Central Park to the Cotswolds
Leah had been waiting for JR to propose for quite some time. She had suspected Central Park might be the moment. Then a couple of other locations came and went without the question being asked. Each time, nothing materialised.
What she did not know was that JR had been planning something rather special. He had decided that the Cotswolds, during their summer holiday to the UK and Europe, was going to be the place. Furthermore, he had been liaising with me in the weeks leading up to the trip. Quietly putting the most beautiful proposal plan together without Leah suspecting a thing.

The Thyme Hotel — A COTSWOLDS GEM
The Thyme Hotel sits in the quintessential Cotswolds village of Southrop, near Lechlade in Gloucestershire. It is a collection of beautifully restored seventeenth-century Cotswold stone buildings set within the most stunning grounds. Kitchen gardens, orchards, flower gardens and sweeping lawns all create an atmosphere that feels wonderfully private and completely magical. Furthermore, the hotel has its own farm, its own cookery school and one of the most celebrated restaurants in the Cotswolds.
As a setting for Cotswolds proposal photography, it is simply breathtaking. The honey-coloured stone, the beautiful gardens and the extraordinary sense of peace all create something that feels deeply romantic. It is one of those places that makes everything feel more significant. The perfect place, in other words, for the most important question of a lifetime.
The Plan
JR, the wonderful team at The Thyme, and I had been working on the plan together in the weeks before the proposal. JR and Leah were staying at the hotel for a couple of nights. They had dinner booked for the evening of the proposal. Before dinner, JR was to visit reception and ask for a tour of the gardens. A member of the hotel team would guide them towards the orchard, a beautifully private space away from the main hotel.
I would be waiting in the orchard. As the three of them approached, I would pretend to be lost and pull the staff member aside for directions, leaving JR and Leah to walk ahead alone towards a small bench. The hotel team had dressed it beautifully with soft blankets, cushions, a bottle of champagne on ice and a handwritten note from JR. The note told Leah how much he loved her and their life together, finishing with three words. Will you marry me?

The Moment
As they walked into the orchard, Leah saw the bench. The penny dropped. She sat down quietly and read JR’s note, taking every word in. It was one of the most still and genuine moments I have ever photographed. JR got down on one knee with the most beautiful engagement ring, and she said yes. She was completely overwhelmed with happiness, and so was he.
They held each other in the orchard while the Cotswolds countryside surrounded them in the most peaceful and perfect way. I was on the sidelines capturing every second of it, feeling genuinely humbled. Being trusted to be part of such a significant moment in two people’s lives is something I never take for granted.
After the proposal, they shared a glass of champagne, took a few quiet minutes to let the news sink in, and then we headed off through the grounds for some engagement photographs to mark the occasion.
Cotswolds Engagement Photography at The Thyme Hotel
The timing could not have been more perfect. They were both beautifully dressed for dinner, the evening light was soft and golden, and the grounds of The Thyme were breathtaking. We wandered through the flower garden and down into the long grass, taking our time and enjoying the most beautiful Cotswolds evening.
Interestingly, Leah had actually asked the hotel before the tour whether someone could take a few photographs of them while they were there. She had no idea I was already waiting. Luckily, I was very much on hand.
The engagement photography we captured that evening is some of the most meaningful work I have ever done. JR and Leah were completely natural, completely happy and completely in love, and it shows in every single image. After our shoot, I left them to head into dinner and celebrate together. Two people from New York, newly engaged in a beautiful Cotswolds orchard. What an absolute privilege.

Tips for Couples Planning a Proposal in the Cotswolds
Choose somewhere private. The best proposals happen away from the crowds. The Cotswolds has so many beautiful and intimate settings, from private hotel gardens to quiet village squares and secluded riverbanks.
Work with your venue. The team at The Thyme were extraordinary in bringing JR’s plan to life. Good venues will always go above and beyond. Do not be afraid to share your vision and ask for help.
Book a proposal photographer. The moment itself happens so quickly, and the emotions are so overwhelming that having someone there to capture it is something couples are always enormously grateful for afterwards. Combining the proposal with a Cotswolds engagement photography session immediately afterwards means you leave with a beautiful set of images to treasure forever.
Think about timing. Golden hour in the Cotswolds is extraordinary. If you can time your proposal for the late afternoon or early evening, the light will be soft, warm and completely magical.
Make it personal. JR’s handwritten note was the detail that made Leah’s proposal completely unforgettable. Think about what will mean the most to your partner specifically and build your proposal around that.
