The Cotswolds has a quiet magic in the early morning. The honey-coloured stone glows even on a grey day. The villages feel entirely your own. That was the scene that greeted us when Poornima and Nipun arrived for their Cotswolds engagement photography session. It was cool, a little rainy, and completely beautiful. And they had never visited before.
From London to the Cotswolds — Falling in Love with a Location
From our very first exchange, I could see that Poornima and Nipun put real thought into the things that matter. They had spent time researching Cotswolds engagement shoot locations, and the images they found drew them in immediately — low stone bridges, riverside villages, and soft English countryside. They were planning a wedding in India, but wanted portraits that felt personal and close to home. A Cotswolds engagement shoot felt like the perfect way to do that. We talked through ideas over email, and two locations kept coming up — Bourton on the Water and Lower Slaughter. I was delighted to make them a reality.
When they asked me to suggest locations, Bourton on the Water and Lower Slaughter came to mind straight away. Both villages sit in the heart of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds and lie close to each other. Together, they offer a wonderful range of backdrops. Bourton brings open greens and iconic bridges. Lower Slaughter offers narrow lanes, a mill stream, and real seclusion. Poornima and Nipun loved the look of both, and our plan was set.

Bourton on the Water — The Venice of the Cotswolds
We started in Bourton on the Water, arriving early while the village was still quiet. If you have never visited, it is one of the most photographed villages in the Cotswolds. The River Windrush flows gently through the centre, flanked by wide greens and crossed by low stone bridges. The oldest dates back to 1654. People call it the Venice of the Cotswolds, and standing there in the morning quiet, you completely understand why.
For engagement photography in Bourton on the Water, the bridges are everything. Each one frames a couple differently. Some offer a sweeping view down the Windrush. Others tuck you into something more intimate, with the water gliding softly beneath you. We moved through several bridges as the morning light shifted. Poornima and Nipun settled beautifully into the rhythm of the shoot. That early start was worth every alarm.
The weather wasn’t perfect by anyone’s definition. It was overcast, with moments of drizzle. But soft, diffused light is honestly a gift for Cotswolds engagement photography. No harsh shadows. No squinting into the sun. Just a beautiful, even glow that suited them perfectly.
Lower Slaughter — Quiet, Timeless and Utterly Romantic
After Bourton, we made the short drive to Lower Slaughter. The mood shifted beautifully. If Bourton on the Water is the Cotswolds at its most celebrated, Lower Slaughter is its quieter, more private sibling. The Eye Brook winds through the village past a nineteenth-century corn mill, stone cottages, and timeless gardens. It is the kind of place that slows you down.
It was noticeably quieter than Bourton. That gave us space to be unhurried and thoughtful. Poornima and Nipun were naturals in front of the camera. They were relaxed, connected, and genuinely happy to be there. Lower Slaughter gave us the perfect setting to capture that ease. The narrow lanes, the old mill, the soft reflections in the water — it all came together beautifully.
For anyone considering engagement photography in the Cotswolds, I cannot recommend Lower Slaughter highly enough. It photographs beautifully in almost any weather. The romance feels completely effortless.

A Wedding in India, and Memories Made in England
Poornima and Nipun marry in India next month. This Cotswolds engagement shoot gave them something personal to mark the lead-up to that day. Both doctors, they are quietly brilliant people — warm, thoughtful, and wonderful to spend a morning with. I always love working with couples discovering a place for the first time. The sense of wonder is real, and it shows in every frame.
These images will sit alongside their wedding photographs for the rest of their lives. A record of two people in a beautiful corner of England, one month before everything began. I am so glad we made it work, cold morning and all.
Planning Your Own Cotswolds Engagement Shoot
Here is what is worth knowing if you are dreaming of your own Cotswolds engagement photography session.
Choose your timing wisely. Early mornings and weekdays are far quieter in Bourton on the Water. In summer, the village fills up fast. An early start gives you the village almost entirely to yourselves.
Don’t let the weather put you off. Overcast days produce some of the most beautiful, softly lit engagement photographs. A little rain adds atmosphere. A warm coat and a good attitude go a long way.
Trust your photographer with locations. The Cotswolds have dozens of villages and landscapes, each with its own character. Part of my job is matching the right locations to each couple. If you are unsure where to start, I am always happy to talk it through.
I photograph weddings and engagement shoots across the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, London and Buckinghamshire. If you would love to explore the Cotswolds together before your wedding day, I would love to hear from you. Please contact me here, I can’t wait to meet you.
