There is something undeniably magical about wedding sparklers. The warm glow, the movement, the expressions of pure joy, sparkler moments are some of my absolute favourites to photograph. Furthermore, with a little planning, they are surprisingly easy to get right. Here are my top wedding sparkler tips to help you create those dreamy, picture-perfect moments.
1. Choose the right Sparklers
Not all sparklers are equal! Standard short sparklers from Bonfire Night simply will not work for a wedding. They burn too quickly and leave no time for beautiful photographs.
For weddings, always choose long sparklers, ideally 18 or 20 inches. These burn for a couple of minutes, giving you plenty of time to walk through them and share a kiss. Additionally, opt for low-smoke, gold coloured sparklers. They produce the cleanest and most elegant effect in photographs. Amazon is a great place to start — they stock a wide range at reasonable prices.
2. Plan your sparkler moment
There are several wonderful ways to incorporate sparklers into your wedding day. Each one creates a different kind of magic.
The Grand Exit — Guests line up with sparklers to create a glowing tunnel for you to walk through. It is the most popular option and a spectacular way to end the night.
First Dance with Sparklers — If your venue allows it, sparklers or cold fireworks during your first dance make the moment even more unforgettable.
A Romantic Portrait Session — For something more intimate, sparklers create beautiful swirls of light and a warm, romantic glow for couple portraits.
Whichever option you choose, always have a clear plan in place. As a result, everyone knows exactly what to expect, and the moment runs smoothly.
3. Think Carefully About Timing
Sparklers look most magical when it is genuinely dark. Therefore, think carefully about when to schedule your sparkler moment.
For summer weddings in the UK, it may not get dark until late in the evening. If some guests might leave before then, consider moving the sparkler moment slightly earlier. Meanwhile, blue hour, the hour just after sunset, also produces the most beautiful, atmospheric light for photographs. It is well worth considering.
4. Check With Your Venue First
Before falling in love with the idea of a sparkler exit, always check with your venue first. Some venues have restrictions, particularly historic buildings. Every venue will also have safety regulations to consider.
However, if sparklers are not permitted, there are stunning alternatives. Think fairy lights, confetti cannons or cold fireworks. Each one creates a wonderful atmosphere and photographs beautifully.
5. Organise Your Guests for the Best Photos
A little coordination goes a long way for sparkler photographs. Here is how to make it run smoothly:
Assign someone to take charge. A trusted bridesmaid, groomsman or your wedding planner can gather guests and hand out sparklers. This takes the pressure off you completely.
Give clear instructions. Let guests know when and how to light their sparklers. Two lines facing each other, sparklers held high, create the most beautiful tunnel effect.
Light sparklers in batches. Have plenty of lighters ready so sparklers can be lit as quickly as possible. Alternatively, use one lit sparkler to light another, it is much faster and ensures they all glow at the same time.
Keep the energy high. Encourage guests to cheer and wave their sparklers. Above all, this joyful energy will shine through in every photograph.
6. Keep Safety in Mind
Sparklers are beautiful, but they do involve fire. Therefore, a few simple precautions are essential.
Always have a bucket of water or sand nearby so guests can safely extinguish their sparklers afterwards. Your venue should provide this. Additionally, keep sparklers away from younger children or ensure strict adult supervision. Encourage guests to hold their sparklers up and away from themselves and others at all times.
