There is a particular kind of magic that happens when a wedding day does not go entirely to plan. The weather arrives uninvited, the outdoor ceremony moves indoors, and the vision you had carefully imagined looks a little different from how you had pictured it. And yet somehow, without fail, something even more beautiful takes its place. Hannah and Sindu’s rainy wedding at Notley Abbey in Buckinghamshire was exactly that kind of day. Warm, intimate, and completely full of love from the very first moment to the very last song of the evening. Furthermore, as a regular Notley Abbey wedding photographer, I feel genuinely lucky every time I get to spend a day at this extraordinary venue. This one was particularly special.
Hannah and Sindu are both doctors, and they are two of the warmest, most genuine, and most wonderful people I have ever had the privilege of spending a wedding day with. Their families were equally wonderful, and the whole group had an energy and warmth that filled every corner of Notley Abbey throughout the day. I honestly did not want to leave.
A Relaxed Morning at Notley Abbey
Both Hannah and Sindu got ready on site at Notley Abbey, which made for the most wonderfully relaxed and well-documented morning. Hannah spent the morning in the beautiful bridal suite with her bridesmaids, surrounded by laughter and quiet excitement. Meanwhile, Sindu and the boys got ready separately in the cottage in the grounds.
I always love photographing both groups when everyone is getting ready at the same venue, and this morning was a particular joy. The getting-ready photographs at Notley Abbey are always beautiful, and the natural light in the bridal suite created the most gorgeous conditions for those quiet, intimate morning moments.
A Beautiful Ceremony in the Monk’s Refectory
The ceremony took place in the magnificent Monk’s Refectory at Notley Abbey, and it was genuinely one of the most beautiful ceremonies I have ever witnessed. The exposed beams, the medieval atmosphere, and the warm, intimate energy of the room created the most extraordinary setting. Furthermore, as a rainy wedding at Notley Abbey showed me once again, this venue is simply extraordinary in any weather.
The ceremony was led by a celebrant, and I always love a celebrant-led ceremony for exactly this reason. You learn so much more about a couple. Their story, their personalities, and the moments that define them as two people who chose each other. Hannah and Sindu’s ceremony was full of all of those things. Warm, personal, and deeply moving throughout.
Their vows to each other were something else entirely. So heartfelt and so full of genuine love that I found myself quietly shedding a tear behind my camera. I am not ashamed to admit it at all. They were some of the most touching words I have heard at a wedding in a very long time. Furthermore, at the end of the ceremony, several guests were invited to say a few words, and the room was completely still as they did. It was one of those ceremonies that remind you exactly why this job is the greatest in the world.
Confetti in the Aisle — Making the Best of the Rain
Hannah really wanted her confetti moment, and she was going to have it regardless of what the weather was doing outside. As they walked back up the aisle after the ceremony, their guests showered them with confetti right there in the monks’ refectory. It was spontaneous, joyful, and completely brilliant.
The photographs from that moment are some of my absolute favourites of the entire day. The warm light, the smiles on their faces, and the pure happiness radiating from both of them as they walked through a tunnel of confetti indoors. They looked so genuinely happy to be married that the rain outside was completely irrelevant. Furthermore, it showed in every single frame.
An Indoor Drinks Reception at Notley Abbey
The drinks reception moved inside to the main house at Notley Abbey, and it was wonderful. The beautiful interiors, the warm atmosphere, and the laughter of a truly wonderful group of people made it feel completely special. One of the great things about Notley Abbey on a rainy day is that the inside spaces are every bit as beautiful as the outside ones.
I took group photographs in the Abbot’s Hall, which provided a gorgeous and characterful backdrop. Then, during a brief and unexpected break in the rain, I quickly gathered the wedding party and headed outside for a few precious minutes of outdoor portraits before the heavens opened again. The photographs from those few minutes are extraordinary and show exactly what Notley Abbey looks like in the rain. Lush, green, and completely beautiful.
Speeches That Made Everyone Cry
The speeches were genuinely some of the most touching I have ever heard at a wedding. Honest, emotional, and full of love for Hannah and Sindu as individuals and as a couple. There was not a dry eye in the room, and I do not think anyone was particularly bothered about that. This was a group of people who clearly love each other enormously, and it showed in every single moment.
The room was full of genuine emotion throughout, and it showed in every single photograph.
The Weather Finally Breaks — and We Run Outside
When Hannah and Sindu sat down for their wedding breakfast, the rain finally stopped. The grounds of Notley Abbey were completely soaked, the grass was glistening, and the light had turned soft and absolutely beautiful. I knew immediately that we had to go outside.
I apologise to Hannah and Sindu for interrupting their meal, but I do not regret it for a single second. We headed out into the wet grounds together, and what followed was genuinely extraordinary. The soaking lawns, the soft post-rain light, and the lush green surroundings of Notley Abbey in June created the most incredible backdrop for portraits. You would simply not believe the photographs we managed to capture in those precious minutes outdoors.
This is one of the great secrets of rainy day wedding photography. The light after rain is unlike anything else. Soft, luminous and completely flattering. Furthermore, The ground was soaking, but the photographs we managed to capture during this rainy wedding at Notley Abbey were genuinely extraordinary
A Party That Nobody Wanted to End
Then it was time to party, and this group absolutely knew how to celebrate. The dance floor filled from the very first song, and the energy in the Monk’s Refectory was electric all evening. I stayed as long as I possibly could because, honestly, I did not want to leave. I had such a wonderful day with Hannah, Sindu, and their incredible friends and family that saying goodbye felt genuinely difficult. It was one of those evenings where you feel less like a photographer and more like a guest who happens to have a camera.
A Few Tips for Couples Worried About Rain on Their Wedding Day
Hannah and Sindu’s day is a beautiful example of something I see time and again as a wedding photographer. The weather does not define a wedding day. The people do. Here are a few gentle tips for couples who are worried about rain.
Trust your venue. Notley Abbey is stunning inside and out, and its interior spaces are every bit as beautiful and photogenic as the grounds. A rainy day simply means we use them differently.
Embrace the light. Soft overcast light is actually one of the most flattering conditions for wedding photography. No harsh shadows, no squinting into the sun. Just a beautiful, even glow that suits every couple.
Let go of the plan. The couples who enjoy rainy wedding days the most are the ones who decide early on that they are going to have a wonderful day regardless. Hannah and Sindu made that decision, and their day was all the more joyful for it.
Know that the photographs will be beautiful. The lush green grounds of Notley Abbey after rain are genuinely extraordinary. Some of my most stunning Notley Abbey wedding photography has been captured on grey or rainy days. Trust me completely.
