A Romantic Oxford Wedding at the Bodleian Library
There are some weddings that stay with you long after the day is done. Rachel and Alison’s September celebration at the Bodleian Library in Oxford was one of them. Intimate, emotional, and effortlessly beautiful, it was exactly the kind of day I came into wedding photography to capture.
Their story began in Vancouver, where Rachel was studying for her PhD. Their connection was instant, and their path led them, eventually, to Oxford, where Alison had been offered a scholarship. They built their life in this extraordinary city, and when it came to their wedding, there was really only one place it could be. The Bodleian Library felt like theirs. And in so many ways, it was.
When we first spoke, they told me they wanted their wedding photography to feel soft, romantic and natural. Elegant storytelling rather than anything staged or forced. That is exactly the kind of photography I love to create, and from that first conversation, I knew we were going to work beautifully together.
Bridal Preparations and a First Look at the Wren Door
Rachel and Alison spent the morning getting ready separately with their bridal parties. The energy was warm and joyful with laughter, anticipation and the kind of quiet excitement that fills a room before a wedding. Their sage green colour scheme was a perfect choice for a September wedding in Oxford. Understated, elegant and completely timeless against the honey-toned stone of the Bodleian.
Once ready, they met for their first look outside the famous Wren Door. It is one of my favourite spots in Oxford for a reason, as the ancient stonework frames a couple beautifully, and the light in September has a warmth that is hard to replicate at any other time of year. The emotion in that first glance between them was everything. They both looked absolutely radiant.
Before the ceremony, we explored the Bodleian’s incredible architecture for portraits. The cool stone walls, the warm golden September light, the grand wooden doors, it was exactly the aesthetic they had hoped for. Soft, romantic and deeply elegant.
A Heartfelt Ceremony in Convocation House
The ceremony took place in Convocation House, one of Oxford’s most atmospheric and historic spaces. Its centuries-old wood panelling and gentle light created a truly magical setting for Rachel and Alison to exchange their vows. It felt intimate despite its grandeur, which is exactly what makes it such a perfect ceremony space for an elegant wedding at the Bodleian Library.
Afterwards, guests gathered in the quad for a relaxed drinks reception. September in Oxford can be gloriously warm, and the courtyard felt alive with golden afternoon light and happy conversation. It was an intimate celebration surrounded entirely by the people who mattered most.
The Wedding Breakfast and Speeches in the Divinity School
The wedding breakfast and speeches were held in the magnificent Divinity School, catered by the wonderful team at Oxford Fine Dining. If you have never seen the Divinity School dressed for a wedding breakfast, it is truly something. The gothic ceiling soars above long candlelit tables, and the whole space glows with warmth and beauty. As an autumn wedding venue in Oxford, it is simply unmatched.
The speeches were a perfect balance of humour and heartfelt emotion. The room filled with laughter and happy tears in equal measure. As a Bodleian Library wedding photographer, moments like these are what I live for. Genuine connection, natural reactions, and a room full of love.
Evening Portraits Around Oxford
As the sun began to set on their September wedding day, I took Rachel and Alison out for a final set of portraits at some of my favourite Oxford locations. The Radcliffe Camera, the Bridge of Sighs, the steps by the Wren Door and All Souls Gate, each one offered something different, and the soft evening light wrapped around them beautifully.
Autumn evenings in Oxford have a quality of light that is completely magical for wedding photography. The warmth, the golden glow, the long shadows. It all comes together in a way that feels cinematic and timeless. These are some of my favourite images from the entire day.
Back inside, the evening party was everything a celebration should be. Dancing, laughter, joy and a room full of people utterly happy to be there. It was the perfect ending to a truly elegant Oxford wedding, and one I will remember for a very long time.
