There are some cities that make a photographer’s heart sing, and Cambridge is firmly at the top of my list. Every single time I visit, I discover something new. A hidden alleyway, a beautiful archway, a pocket of golden light falling perfectly across ancient stone. Furthermore, as a setting for Cambridge engagement photography, it is simply unmatched. The winding streets, the picturesque river, the extraordinary college buildings, and the centuries of history woven into every corner make it one of the most beautiful cities in the world for a couple’s shoot.
Last summer I had the most wonderful pleasure of spending a day in Cambridge with Nicole and Lin for their engagement photography session, and it was genuinely one of the most enjoyable shoots I have ever done. Beautiful couple, beautiful city, and the most stunning images to show for it. I hope you love them as much as I do.
Why Nicole and Lin Chose Cambridge for Their Engagement Photography
Nicole and Lin chose Cambridge for their engagement photography session for the most personal and lovely of reasons. They have a genuine love of the city, and Lin’s brother studies at one of the colleges there, which makes it extra special and close to both of their hearts.
They were planning their wedding in Singapore the following year and were excitedly making plans throughout our shoot. This Cambridge engagement photography session was the perfect way to celebrate their engagement, document this happy chapter, and get some beautiful images of the two of them to treasure before the big day. It was also a wonderful opportunity to get completely comfortable in front of the camera before their wedding day arrived, which always makes such a difference to how relaxed and natural couples feel on the day itself.
A Beautiful Day in the City — Despite the Heat
It was one of the hottest days on record when we met in Cambridge. I will be completely honest — I was absolutely melting. Nicole and Lin, however, remained completely and effortlessly cool throughout the entire shoot, which I can only admire. They looked absolutely incredible from start to finish and never once complained about the heat, which says everything about what a wonderful and easygoing couple they are.
We broke halfway through for a quick outfit and makeup change, which gave us a lovely natural break in the day and brought a fresh energy to the second half of the session. Two different looks, two different vibes and twice the variety in the final gallery.
Exploring Cambridge Together
We wandered through the city together at a relaxed and unhurried pace, stopping whenever a beautiful location presented itself. And in Cambridge, beautiful locations present themselves at every single turn. The city is extraordinary for Cambridge engagement photography precisely because there is so much variety within such a small and walkable area.
We took in the winding alleyways and picturesque streets of the old town, where the light falls beautifully between the ancient buildings and creates the most wonderful natural frames for portraits. The old college buildings provided a backdrop full of history, character and genuine grandeur. The beautiful River Cam, with punters drifting past in the most quintessentially English way, added a wonderfully relaxed and romantic feel to several of our favourite images.
Nicole and Lin were completely natural in front of the camera. They were relaxed, playful and genuinely happy to be there, which always produces the most beautiful and authentic photographs. These images are a genuinely stunning representation of them as a couple and of this extraordinary city, and I could not be prouder of every single one of them.
Why Cambridge is One of the Most Beautiful Cities for Engagement Photography
Cambridge offers something for every couple and every style of photography. The ancient architecture gives images a timeless and classic quality that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the UK. The river and the punts bring a romantic and distinctly English charm. The hidden streets and cobbled lanes create intimacy and character. Furthermore, the city changes beautifully with every season, which means Cambridge engagement photography looks completely different in spring blossom, summer sunshine, autumn warmth and winter light.
It is a city I return to as often as I possibly can, and every single visit gives me something new and something beautiful. If you are considering Cambridge for your engagement photography session, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
