Zak & Darcy’s Bodleian Library Wedding in Oxford: A Transatlantic Love Story
Some venues simply speak for themselves. The Bodleian Library in Oxford is one of them. Ancient stonework, candlelit halls, centuries of history in every corner. It is the kind of wedding venue that stops you in your tracks the first time you see it. For Zak and Darcy, travelling all the way from Seattle to get married here, it was love at first sight. And honestly, I completely understand why.
Zak and Darcy had always imagined a destination wedding with real character. Not sun and sand, but something with a story woven into the walls. A trip through the Lake District brought them south to Oxford, where they discovered almost by accident that the Bodleian hosted weddings. That was that. A winter wedding at the Bodleian Library felt like destiny, and from the moment they got in touch, I knew it was going to be a very special day.
Getting Ready at the Marriott Hotel Oxford
The day began at the Marriott Hotel in Oxford, where Zak and Darcy started the morning together before separating to get ready. From the very beginning, the day had a gentle, unhurried energy that I always love to see.
Zak shared some tender moments with his dad, and his mum helped him with his buttonhole. The kind of quiet family moments that make getting ready photographs so meaningful. Darcy’s dad joined her for an emotional first look that had everyone reaching for tissues. Full of love, full of excitement, and completely beautiful.
Before heading to the Bodleian, Zak and Darcy shared a private first look on the hotel’s rooftop terrace. Just the two of them, Oxford spread out below, before the celebrations began. It was one of my favourite moments of the whole day.
Wedding Portraits around Oxford
After getting ready, Zak and Darcy headed into the heart of Oxford in a classic Rolls-Royce. Oxford is one of the most extraordinary cities in the world for wedding photography, and we made full use of it.
We photographed at the Bridge of Sighs, All Souls Gate, the Radcliffe Camera, the steps of the Science Museum and the Wren Door of the Bodleian Library. Each location brought something different with their grandeur, intimacy, history, and charm. Later, we explored Duke Humfrey’s Library, which held particular meaning for Darcy. It added a layer of personal magic to their wedding album that I absolutely loved capturing.
A Beautiful Ceremony in Convocation House
The ceremony took place in Convocation House, one of the most beautiful and intimate spaces within the Bodleian Library. For a winter wedding at the Bodleian Library, it is simply perfect. The wood-panelled walls and warm atmosphere create a sense of occasion that feels both grand and deeply personal.
Their celebrant told the story of Zak and Darcy as a couple with warmth and humour, including some wonderful nods to their beloved cats. The room was full of laughter and tears in equal measure. It was exactly what a wedding ceremony should be.
Drinks, Dinner & Dancing in the Divinity School
After the ceremony, guests moved through to the Divinity School for drinks, and what a space to celebrate in. The gothic ceiling soared above them, the light was warm and golden, and the atmosphere was electric. The Divinity School then hosted the wedding breakfast, creating a seamless and magical flow to the evening.
A close friend delivered the only speech of the day, heartfelt, funny and perfectly judged. Then the dance floor opened and stayed busy for the rest of the night. The Divinity School is honestly one of my favourite spaces to photograph an evening reception. The architecture does so much of the work, and the energy in that room was wonderful.
A Destination Wedding Full of Heart
Zak and Darcy’s winter wedding at the Bodleian Library was everything a destination wedding should be. Guests travelled from near and far, the day flowed beautifully, and every corner of Oxford felt alive with celebration. From the soft winter light around the Radcliffe Camera to the dancing under the Divinity School’s gothic arches, it was a day full of joy, warmth and love.

We recently got married at the beautiful Bodleian library in Oxford and were recommended to Suzy by our wedding planner. We knew from the first meeting that Suzy would be the best photographer!
