Summer family photos Ideas
I adore summer family photos. The long days, the beautiful light, children running carefree in long grass, it is all so idyllic! Family photography in general is hugely important to me and it is what started my journey into professional photography. I know this is going to sound really cliché but bear with me! When I had my daughter I wanted to capture every milestone with images that would last us a lifetime. Photos I could look back on and reminisce. I love that I can do this for myself and for my clients too, it gives me a really warm fuzzy feeling
Family photography at any time of the year is a beautiful thing. Every season brings with it a different look and feel and I love the diversity in the imagery. Summer family photos hold a particularly special place in my heart. I adore the softness of the images, the beautiful pastel colours, the warmth. It is probably the easiest season when it comes to choosing a location. We live in a beautiful country with so many green spaces and during the summer months, these really come into their own. I always recommend choosing a location for a photoshoot that has different and interesting features. Long grass is my current obsession and is abundance in summer. Pretty gardens with colourful flowers, wildflower meadows, parks and woodland. The list is endless and all will make for beautiful photos of you and your family
What to Wear for Family Pictures Outside
First and foremost, wear something you are comfortable in. If you are uncomfortable in your clothes then you will look it in your photos. Plan your outfits in advance so that when it comes to the day you are relaxed and not having a last-minute outfit panic. For summer family photos you would like to think the weather would be good, however, this is England so never count on it. Dress for the weather and bring layers just in case you need them, cold kids = grumpy kids! Also plan for getting down on the ground, sitting in long grass, running with the kids etc. You won’t want to be stitched into anything and not able to move freely
Try and coordinate your outfits as much as you can but don’t wear the same thing, you want to compliment each other but not clash. Small patterns can look great in pictures as they add a bit of flair. A lovely flowy dress with a small print will look beautiful, just keep prints small and subtle. Avoid large patterns or logos or anything with big stripes. These will be distracting and can date quickly, you want your images to be timeless
Best Colours for Family Pictures Outside
This may sound silly but think of a colour palette for the family and stick to 2-4 colours from it. If one of you was in bright pink and one in neon green you will clash massively. Soft muted colours work best as they look beautiful, compliment the background and the clothes won’t end up the centre of attention. For summer family photos I would recommend pretty pastel colours, these will work well whatever location we choose for the photoshoot. The colours you choose will determine the overall look and feel of your photos. Soft colours will mean your photos have a slightly dreamier look, bold and vivid colours will make them look sharper. Try and avoid white as this can make you washed out, black can also have the same effect. Instead, opt for cream or grey as they are much more flattering. Below I have given examples of the sort of colours I feel work really well for summer family photos. These are just examples but you get the gist!
